I have nothing left to say about myself

I have seen the light

At around this time last year, an extremely rare phenomenon occurred: one of hell’s circles froze over. Well, I have crawled out of hibernation to let you know that the deep freeze has extended its reach and if you listen closely, you might just be able to hear the faint ringing echoes of a crazed maniacal laugh.

When word got out that there was going to be a remake of Fated to Love You, I took it as another sign that K-dramas had run out of ideas. There are already 3, 765, 430 co-habitation/fake marriage /girl meets ass rom-coms out there. Why the hell does the universe need another one to add to the tally? (Thankfully for everyone else, the Powers That Be rarely pay any attention to me.)

At any rate, I have no idea what possessed me to watch this drama. Whatever the source of this divine intervention (and I suspect it has something to do with a certain social networking site that rhymes vaguely with “time waster”), I thank you from the bottom of my calcified heart for opening my eyes to the smoking HOT specimen of man flesh multi-faceted thespian known as Jang Hyuk. I once was blind but now I see — and let’s just say that the last few weeks have been nothing short of revelatory, starting with the eyeful I got from Innocent Thing.

This, gentle reader, is the story of my journey to enlightenment.

Once More with Feeling: Saying Goodbye to Itazura na Kiss ~ Love in Tokyo

She’s a dreamer with her head in the clouds. He’s an apathetic genius living his life on autopilot. They’re the last two people you’d ever expect to fall in love with each other…

daydreamnerdstupid

But once in a while, something unexpected happens to bring two very different individuals together and open their eyes to possibilities that they never considered before.

nowaydoctor

Their journey together is far from easy though (in part because one of them is an emotional retard). As they navigate the minefields of the heart, they experience for the first time, the highs and lows of falling in love.

And so, after years of fervent prayer and wishing upon falling stars…

after much resistance and denial…

I hope your words taste good because you are going to be eating a lot of them, Naoki

and a few awkward confessions…

And for all of us watching at home, after months of spazzing and flailing, and two weeks of wishing we could laser beam some sense into Naoki, it has finally come to this.

*sigh* Why must you make things so difficult for yourself, Naoki?

Judge me all you want but the drama I am currently watching religiously is (much to my own embarrassment -.-) ItaKiss ~ Love in Tokyo. I’m pretty sure that at least one circle of hell has frozen over considering that I have never been able to stomach any of the previous adaptations, much less the manga.

Not going to lie: this is to my brain what candy floss is to my teeth but damn if it doesn’t fill my days with spazzy glee. With the exception of episode 11, I haven’t had a problem with any of the subsequent ones. I know there are people who find the pacing of this final arc a little slow but I actually like its introspective tone and the fact that it shows the characters growing up and contemplating their future. They can’t stay in high school or college forever and canon or not, if Naoki and Kotoko are meant to be together for the long haul, I need this drama to show me that they share a connection that cannot be replaced. I need to see something more substantial than cute displays of puppy love.

Long, rambly post ahead. Spoilers galore, naturally. I beg your indulgence and dear lord, it’s now T-minus 10 minutes to the episode finale. I haven’t been this excited about a drama since SUFBB. Pretty sure everyone is going to gif and screencap the crap out of this last episode as soon as it’s done airing XDDD (more…)

Meet my new research subject…

I didn’t think much of Kiritani Kenta when I first saw him in JIN. In my mind, he was that bug-eyed dork with a scalpel (and let me assure you that I say this with the greatest affection.)

So even though Saburi-kun grew on me over the course of 21 episodes, I was never moved to devote 85 percent of my hard disk space to the actor…

…until I had my long overdue date with Crows Zero last weekend.

Okay, maybe 85 percent is an exaggeration but the moment I saw him strut into view in that white shirt and black slacks combo, it was like discovering Tamaki Hiroshi in Nodame Cantabile all over again.

[All images and gifs in this post from kiritani kenta (fab site, btw) unless otherwise stated. The crappy JIN screencap above is mine though.]

Except that with Kenta you just know he isn’t going to go on some fool diet and starve himself into a coma any time soon. Not to mention, he’s got to be the most adorkable ham to hit the variety show circuit ever.

2011 Roundup Part 1: To All the Boys I’ve Loved This Year

So it’s that time of the year again to cast a retrospective eye on the events of the last 12 months. Kicking off the whole year-in-review process here at Midnight Express is my little tribute to the boys who contributed to many late nights and, uh, lost hours. Yeah, let’s just leave it as that.

But before we begin, a little song:

To All the Boys I’ve Loved This Year

To all the boys I’ve loved this year
Whose vids now clog my computer
Naked Shirtless hunks and high school hosts
I dedicate this post
To all the boys I’ve loved this year

To all the boys I stalked like mad
On Tumblr and the Internet
God, where did my time go?
I need a life I know
I swear I was never this shallow.

The year is coming to an end
‘tis now time to say goodbye
‘Cos other pretty boys are coming round the bend
And I’ve only 24 hours in a day…

To all the boys who shared my life
Who now are someone else’s vice
I’m glad you came along
It saddens me to say so long
To all the boys I’ve loved this year

(Adapted from To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before, by Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson)

This was written in a hormonally charged fog so if you’re hoping to glean some intelligent insight into the dramas of the past year, I’m afraid I’ll have to refer you to Dramabeans. Otherwise, welcome! *mild spoilers here and there*
